Sometimes you need to speak before a crowd. No matter the type of crowd you are speaking to, a good public speaker can command the respect of any type of audience. This selection of public speaking tips is sure to improve your effectiveness in nearly any setting.

When speaking in public, make sure that what you have to say is engaging, otherwise you risk boring the crowd. Regardless of what you have to say, it will not go over well if it is boring. Practice your speech on people you know to see how the message you are giving is being received.

Do not allow anything to distract you while you are speaking in public. It is crucial that you don’t participate in activities like twiddling your thumbs or jingling keys. This will give your audience the idea that you would rather be doing something else than be there talking to them.

It is important to realize that most people really want you to succeed. The most important thing is to deliver relevant, interesting information. To help keep your speech entertaining either tell a story about yourself or a joke to warm the crowd up. This will not only warm the crowd, but it will also allow you to relax.

If public speaking makes you anxious, practice doing deep breathing. Before you start to speak, breath deeply a few times and then exhale. Breath using four-count nasal inhales and five-count mouth exhales. Do that five times total, and you’ll be amazed at how you feel!

Do not take drugs or alcohol to relieve your fears. You may think that it will help you loosen up and be more confident, but it can have quite the opposite effect you want. Many great speeches turned bad from too much alcohol; don’t make yours one of them.

You should know your speech to become comfortable with it. Pick an interesting topic that engages you, and you can be sure it will engage your audience. Do not focus on fancy wording or technical language, instead speak in a way that you connect with your audience.

Make use of note cards. You should memorize your speech, but you should also have a copy of it with you. You may not necessarily have the whole thing written out, but having your important points notated can help.

It is a good idea to use slides as a visual aid, but do not allow this to be the largest part of your presentation. If people notice that there is more on the slides than what is coming from your mouth, they will lose interest before you know it.

Tell a joke to break the ice. A joke can help calm your jittery nerves. Additionally, a well timed joke will allow your audience to relax and see you for who your really are. However, be aware that telling too many jokes can make your audience not believe anything you say.

Do your best to deliver unique information to your audience instead of telling them things they could have easily gotten from someone else. You need to make it clear that it is you that they need to listen to. Do research to make sure that you are not giving them duplicated content.

Use visual aids that are informative but not distracting. You only want them to help enhance your speech. You don’t want them to become distracting or overwhelm the message. Visual aids that are made well and emphasizes key points are ideal. They should be easy on the eye and look great but not take the focus away from your speech.

If you’ve got a speech coming up, picture it in your mind. You want to visualize the speech and the audience reactions. You’ll be more confident if you think the audience will respond well.

Believe in yourself. If you think you will do well, you are more likely to do well. If you think you will fall flat on your face, that is something that is more likely to occur. Try to banish negative thoughts from your mind and envision yourself delivering a perfect speech.

Think about the purpose of your speech. Do you need to persuade someone? Are you speaking to entertain? Maybe you are speaking to educate your audience. Always keep your purpose in mind to make a great speech. Make sure that every statement in your speech is working toward that goal.
